You know you want an outdoor patio awning. You know where you want to put it, what style you want, everything seems ready to go— But wait!

Measuring space for awning

What size awning do you need? How do you measure your space to determine your awning size? What clearance is required for a retractable awning, if any?

We’re here to answer those questions for you so you can purchase your awning with confidence!

What Size Awning Do I Need?

There is a very simple equation to determine what size outdoor patio awning you need for your space! And that equation is: add five inches to either side.

For Example: If you are hanging an awning over a 30” wide window, you’ll add five inches to each side for a total awning width of 40”.

Measuring how far your awning should extend depends on the size of the area you need to shade and which cardinal direction your awning faces.

How To Measure Your Space for an Awning

You will need to take two measurements when figuring out the spacing for your outdoor

patio awning: height and width.

To get your height measurement, mark where on the wall you would like to hang the awning and add 8-10 inches above the mark. This will give you your height range for where you can hang your awning.

Retractable awnings require 10 inches of clearance when hung over openings, such as windows or doors, for the enclosure that the awning retracts into. Start at a minimum of 10 inches for height when hanging a retractable awning!

Getting your width measurement is easier: just measure the length of your wall!
